Of What Use Is Poetry?

A month ago Jews celebrated Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The day is the holiest one of the Jewish year: It recognizes that one must look at one’s self and what one has done not only through the past year, but all through one’s life. I’m not a particularly religious guy. I go to Yom Kippur services because my mother, and her parents, did. One of the prayers at the start of this holy day is the Sh’ma koleinu , which begins, “Hear our call, Adonai our God. Show us compassion. Accept our prayer with love and goodwill.” Later in the prayer, the words directed at God say, “Do not cast us away w

I can admit it was a sweet initiative. I didn't know this couple very well, but I met them in person once a few years ago. St Jude Drawings Gallery

Now it's been a month of so since the end of St Jude September I think enough time has passed that I think everyone's drawings should have arrived now so I can share them. It's hard to pick a favourite but here's a selection of them I wanted to highlight here because I enjoy them. I won't be including Jimothy because I included him in the last post, not because I don't love him. I can't wait to do this again next year. I scanned all the drawings this year so I've put them all up on the 2026 gallery for your perusal.

BYD Sold More EVs Last Month Than the US Did All Quarter

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Electrek: The world's leading EV maker is showing no signs of slowing down. BYD sold 490,168 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in October, up 11% from the prior year and the company's highest monthly total in 2026. BYD's battery electric vehicles drove the growth, with a record 305,743 units sold, up 37% year over year and marking the first time its EV sales have crossed the 300,000 mark. To put that into perspective, just over 262,500 EVs were sold in the US in the entire third quarter combined, according to Kelley Blue Book estimates. By the end of the year,
