Why would an AI pause (significantly) hurt the economy?

来源: LessWrong ·

I've seen a bunch of people claiming "well, we need to make sure whatever our AI policy is doesn't hurt the economy because people will feel that in their wallets and hate it (and hurting the economy is bad." This might hypothetically be true, but I've never seen anyone argue for it in any detail. Meanwhile, I'd naively expect if shut down AI anytime soon, it wouldn't be that big a deal? (It makes sense that it'd become a bigger deal as AI takes over more of the economy. But it feels like the people saying "it'd hurt the economy" are often the people implying that means we should do less of a

How to Run Better Research With Agent Fleets

In the current safety landscape, researchers are encouraged to use as many agents as possible, even in “fleets,” where a large number of them go out and run experiments while you, uh... wait for them to come back? I've spent the last few months of the Anthropic Fellows Program trying this out. My first attempts were naive, but after a few iterations I found an approach that works well for me. Research is a double loop I want to propose a mental model of research as a double loop, an idea that builds on double-loop learning (Argyris, 1977). The outer loop is reserved for the inputs we currently

Ivan Vendrov: So, notionally we’re going to talk about emergent wisdom in language models following up on my conversation with Davidad. But I’m sure we’ll touch base on all sorts of other fun topics. Do you have a sense of where we should start, or should I just start by responding to your Twitter reply? Richard Ngo: Well, do you want to tell me about what you think of as wisdom, or is there some things that you have there that you wa

What They Took From You

Until August 1914 a sensible, law-abiding Englishman could pass through life and hardly notice the existence of the state, beyond the post office and the police. He could live where he liked and as he liked. He had no official number or identity card. He could travel abroad or leave forever without a passport or […] The post What They Took From You appeared first on Marginal REVOLUTION .

Reviewing the game tapes

A long time ago, football coaches realized that watching previous games was a good way to help players learn to do better. Alas, the only thing we do with “this call may be recorded…” is use it as a cudgel for unempowered shift workers. If we actually want to improve our interactions, perhaps we should […]

How India Is Embracing Social-Emotional Learning

When educators feel emotionally and physically supported, they’re in a much better position to support their students. In India, where the relationship between teacher and student has long been central to education, caring for teachers is essential to sustaining that connection. India’s education system comprises over 1 million government schools and more than 82,000 government-aided institutions. Serving approximately 167 million children, India administers the world’s largest education system. Increasingly, educators around the world recognize that social-emotional skills like navigating con
