Dev snapshot: Godot 4.8 dev 5
As we’re hoping to enter feature freeze later in the month, you can expect this to be one of the last development snapshot highlights of the 4.8 cycle. Relatedly, many of our contributors are currently hard at work to help get their features across the finish line in time, so the number of featured points this time might be slightly lighter than usual. That shouldn’t matter too much though, as quite a few of the new offerings are things that the community have been eagerly awaiting for years . Please consider supporting the project financially , if you are able. Godot is maintained by the effo

Optimizing CPU-side Rendering Code
I want to give people a little bit of insight into what the optimization process looks like for Godot’s renderer. From the outside, rendering optimization can look a little bit like black magic. I want to show a few examples of some optimizations that we did this year to highlight that optimizing rendering code isn’t as scary as it sounds. Bottlenecks In this article I will only be looking at optimizing CPU code. When working on renderers, you need to be very careful about optimizing code both for the CPU and for the GPU, because your ultimate performance will be dictated by the slower of the

Dev snapshot: Godot 4.8 dev 6
“Another development snapshot already? Didn’t they just release one last Friday ?” Indeed, this is much sooner than usual. Even when taking into consideration how development snapshots become more frequent at their tail-end in preparation of feature freeze, less than a week means that exceptional circumstances were at play. Specifically: our previous development snapshot had multiple startup crash reports on macOS and failed to upload to the Google Play Store, which have both been rectified by GH-123439 and GH-123474 respectively. Shockingly, that doesn’t mean that’s all there is to see in thi

In the two weeks since the release of 4.8 beta 1 , our team has made great strides in ensuring the resolution of nearly 150 bugs including around 30 regressions. This blog post covering the beta snapshot, and however many more are to come, will be lighter than the dev snapshots as 4.8 is considered feature-complete at this stage.
