The beat goes on

Juan Atkins, Techno Music Pioneer, Dead at 64 Born in the Motor City and raised in nearby Belleville, Michigan, Atkins became synonymous with techno music alongside fellow classmates Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, the "Belleville Three" who are credited as the architects of Detroit Techno, which fused the house music playing in Chicago and the electronic music of bands like Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra. The history.

Meet Lucy

Lucy is an intelligent, sociable, and active middle-aged woman from Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, despite never committing a crime, she's had to live almost entirely in solitary confinement since the age of two, in Edmonton, Canada, of all places. She was permitted one companion who was relocated away from her in 2007 - and it seems unlikely she'll be allowed to move someone more hospitable or ever have another companion. Lucy is one of the approximately 23 African and Asian elephants still kept in captivity in Canada in 2026. She is held at the Edmonton Valley Zoo (link to the official zoo webpag

Boater rescues tired wallaby swimming out to sea

Boater rescues tired wallaby swimming out to sea more than 100 metres [328 feet] offshore. When seagulls started madly squawking near the Portland marina in western Victoria, Matt Smith thought they'd found a dog in the water. He was in for a surprise. Wallabies, being much shorter, more compact, and more densely-furred than kangaroos are much poorer swimmers than kangaroos.

New accounts on HN 10x more likely to use EM-dashes

I’ve had this sense that HN has gotten absolutely innundated with bots last few months. First most obvious giveaway is the frequency with which you see accounts posting brilliant insights like 13 60 well and t6ctctfuvuh7hguhuig8h88gd to f6gug7h8j8h6fzbuvubt GB I be cugttc fav uhz cb ibub8vgxgvzdrc to bubuvtxfh tf d xxx h z j gj uxomoxtububonjbk P.l.kvh cb hug tf 6 go k7gtcv8j9j7gimpiiuh7i 8ubg or 1662476506 or Аё Beyond the accounts that are visibly glitching out, the vibe is also seriously off. Lots of comments that are incredibly banal, or oddly off topic. Hard to really put a finger o

An NSFW filter for Marginalia Search

… optional, that is. I’ve been working on an NSFW filter for Marginalia Search, as that is something some people have asked for, primarily API consumers. The search engine has had some domain based filtering for a while, based on the UT1 lists, but that isn’t a very comprehensive approach. We’ll land on a single hidden layer neural network approach, implemented from scratch, but before landing on that, many other things were tried along the way.

Maybe you should learn something

You can learn new things. Pixel art, touch typing, 3d modelling, music, calligraphy, wood working, knitting, a language. Whatever is practical and calls to you, you can learn. In the long term, learning new things is fun and makes life richer in ways you can’t even imagine, and it’s a time investment that will pay dividends for life as these skills never really go away. There are even social aspects, as you’ll quite literally become a more interesting person to talk to.

LinkedIn fanfiction

I was on the bus on my way to an important business meeting about the exponential growth of my MRR, when suddenly I noticed some troublemakers were hassling an old lady. Their caps were on backwards, their clothes were baggy, and probably thought the grindset was about skateboarding. I had to act. I opened my macbook and showed Claude what was happening. “Claude, we gotta do something!”, I said. “You’re absolutely right!”, Claude affirmed in a calm and confident font, and thanks to --dangerously-skip-permissions , it had started coding before I had even thought ab

Unranked, systemd, crawls

There’s been some changes to Marginalia Search: Migrated to systemd from docker New unranked query endpoint Wide domains got their own index for faster crawls In brief, this has removed a lot of operational headaches, reduced expensive queries leaving more computational power for the rest, and cut crawl times in half. Let’s tackle them in some order. We have docker at home The system has been migrated off docker compose, and onto bare systemd in production. This has been successful, and solved a number of issues.

Your harddrive is probably full

I currently have 17 GB free space on my root drive, out of 0.47 TB usable space, that’s 3% free space. I also have an additional harddrive installed, 12 TB, it has 140 GB free, which may seem a lot but it’s actually only about 1%. Your harddrive is probably pretty full too. Maybe not as crammed, but odds are it’s probably closer to full than empty. I ran a poll on mastodon and approximately half of the respondents, counting 81 people in total, had a harddrive that was more than 75% full.

Softly now

I don’t know what this post will be, a trip report? For background, maybe a month ago I found myself spending too much time on the unproductive side of the web, the feeds and algorithms have a way of creeping up on you, taking over your whole existence, and so again set up my system of task-specific user accounts and PWA:s to add friction between work, social media, and other tasks.

Marginalia Search, Money, C++, Rust, AI, stuff

Title possibly signs checks the article doesn’t have backing for. This is just a brief pro forma project update. Not much new functionality or anything to announce, last few months have mostly been bug fixes and technical debt cleanup. Most big parts of the search engine are in place, and while there are many things that could be better, we’re less likely to straight up see massive new features, at least in the immediate future. Per familiar intuition from binary searches, the closer you get to your goal the smaller and more deliberate steps you need to take in order to get even cl

Selma Blair

Selma Blair's name has been popping into our inbox recently. Strange, really. Sure, she is Jewish, but she hasn't been relevant since "Cruel Intentions", and when was that? 27 years ago? (She was also in "Legally Blonde". You are not remembering "Legally Blonde" because of Selma Blair. Even if you are, that's 25 years ago. "Legally Blonde" is a quarter century old!)
