Unranked, systemd, crawls
There’s been some changes to Marginalia Search: Migrated to systemd from docker New unranked query endpoint Wide domains got their own index for faster crawls In brief, this has removed a lot of operational headaches, reduced expensive queries leaving more computational power for the rest, and cut crawl times in half. Let’s tackle them in some order. We have docker at home The system has been migrated off docker compose, and onto bare systemd in production. This has been successful, and solved a number of issues.

Your harddrive is probably full
I currently have 17 GB free space on my root drive, out of 0.47 TB usable space, that’s 3% free space. I also have an additional harddrive installed, 12 TB, it has 140 GB free, which may seem a lot but it’s actually only about 1%. Your harddrive is probably pretty full too. Maybe not as crammed, but odds are it’s probably closer to full than empty. I ran a poll on mastodon and approximately half of the respondents, counting 81 people in total, had a harddrive that was more than 75% full.

Softly now
I don’t know what this post will be, a trip report? For background, maybe a month ago I found myself spending too much time on the unproductive side of the web, the feeds and algorithms have a way of creeping up on you, taking over your whole existence, and so again set up my system of task-specific user accounts and PWA:s to add friction between work, social media, and other tasks.

Marginalia Search, Money, C++, Rust, AI, stuff
Title possibly signs checks the article doesn’t have backing for. This is just a brief pro forma project update. Not much new functionality or anything to announce, last few months have mostly been bug fixes and technical debt cleanup. Most big parts of the search engine are in place, and while there are many things that could be better, we’re less likely to straight up see massive new features, at least in the immediate future. Per familiar intuition from binary searches, the closer you get to your goal the smaller and more deliberate steps you need to take in order to get even cl

Selma Blair
Selma Blair's name has been popping into our inbox recently. Strange, really. Sure, she is Jewish, but she hasn't been relevant since "Cruel Intentions", and when was that? 27 years ago? (She was also in "Legally Blonde". You are not remembering "Legally Blonde" because of Selma Blair. Even if you are, that's 25 years ago. "Legally Blonde" is a quarter century old!)

Where Should I Blog? A Field Guide from Corporate Platforms to the IndieWeb
When I assigned blog posts for HT 930: Digital Humanities at United Lutheran Seminary, the first question was not"what should I write?"but "where do I put it?" This made me realize that choosing a blog platform in 2026 is really overhwelming and there is a deep desire for ease of use, simplicity of url, and a community to join. Here is the field guide I have built learning from my students, their needs, and working with them to navigate the blogging landscape. Digital humanities people should care about thi

Seeing life through whimsical glasses
Rose colored sunglasses on my nose, I walk in the rain waving to the dogs I cross path with that reply by looking back happily with their tongue sticking out and their tails wagging. I see a puddle, jump over it, almost fall in it then celebrate this new long jump world record. The rain has stopped and I keep looking at the sky hoping for a rainbow to appear, don't see the red light and almost get run over, this felt like playing crossy roads. Hear me out, life is the funniest thing ever, you just have to make it fun. The world around us is full of things that were designed for one purpose, bu

Forcing OpenWRT on a WD N600 router
According to the OpenWRT wiki, 1 there are three tested methods to install OpenWRT on a WD N600 router. However, when I got my hands on one, neither method worked. Every time I tried to flash the factory image (version 24.10.0 at the time), the router’s light would slowly turn on and off, as if the image was being flashed, but it would never stop. The router would get stuck and never reboot. After a couple hours of tears and frustration, I managed to figure out what the issue was. After giving the factory image a shorter name and following the wiki’s first method, the router would

My coding setup
I have been coding for a few years now, and in that time, I have done nothing but remove complexity from my coding setup and I feel like I've reached a point where I'm happy with it. My favourite editor is ed , but I can't really use it much, therefore, I've settled on Neovim [^1]. I like the keyboard centric editing it offers, and it's actually really fun to use once you've mastered the Vim language. Neovim is a very capable editor, offering all you could imagine from modern IDEs (LSP, Autocomplete, Fuzzy finding, Plugins, Diagnostics,...), but I try to stray away from all these, keeping a ve

Hey everyone! This is the list of all the changes we've done to our projects during the month of October. Wiki , added taxes , and updated . Donsol , fixed some bugs. Note that we plan to release a Playdate build on itch.io next month. Rabbit Waves , finished a new comic page , added a section on monochrome signal flags (scroll to bottom) and updated the zine to include them. Over the summer, we looked around Pino and tried to make a list of all that had changed since we sailed back from Japan and thought it might be nice to make a new video to show you what those changes were.
