Radie Peat: No Human Tongue Can Tell review – Lankum singer’s solo debut is the year’s best folk album
(Rough Trade) Collecting traditional songs of female struggle and strength, the Irish singer invests them with staggering power Lankum singer Radie Peat’s extraordinary debut album begins without frills or ornament: just her voice, stark and low, each breath like air vibrating through the metal reeds of a harmonium. Singing Hares on the Mountain to the tune Shirley Collins arranged for 1964’s Folk Roots, New Routes, Peat accompanies herself subtly on Fender Rhodes piano before adding layers of Mellotron and Wurlitzer. Her simple, quiet approach is consistently startling and profoundly moving.

‘It seems weird for an MC – but lyrics have never been a thing for me’: De La Soul’s honest playlist
Rapper Pos of the hip hop greats favours Barry White for the bedroom and sobs to Stevie Wonder, but which cheese-rock hit does he love on the sly? The first song I fell in love with My father could sing really well – he was in a choir and had this coolness. He would walk around singing Love and Happiness by Al Green and, because he looked so much like him on the cover, I actually thought he was Al Green. The first single I bought Underlove by Melba Moore from Abraham & Straus, this department store in Long Island that had a mini record store inside. I later realised it was produced by Kashif,

‘They said we incited riots’: explosive punks Bad Brains on drugs, self-destruction and recording from jail
Young, black and fuelled by self-help mantras, they were reputedly the best live band on Earth. As their wild first sessions are rereleased, the group talk about scaring club owners – and getting kicked out of the UK Old punks might not agree on much – who was first, who was fastest, where to file the Faith/Void split LP in their record collection – but for those who saw them in their prime, Bad Brains were, unequivocally, the best live band on the planet. YouTube footage bears this out: frontman HR, born Paul D Hudson, is equal parts straining sinew and raw electricity as he bucks and contort

Meeting Elvis was ‘my biggest day with the Beatles’, says road manager’s book
Mal Evans’s tale of historic meeting among revelations in forthcoming memoir unpublished before his death in 1976 Meeting Elvis Presley was “the biggest day of all the years I have spent with the famous Beatles”, the band’s loyal road manager wrote. Distraught over the breakup of his marriage, it is believed to have been “suicide by cop” after he repeatedly pointed an air rifle at police. Continue reading...

Agustin Grasso & Brooklyn Mixtape “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” Agustin Grasso & Brooklyn Mixtape (Fresh Sound/New Talent)
Those old enough to remember the term likely have fond memories of the mixtape. A loving assemblage of tunes personally culled from one’s record collection, mixtapes were sometimes used to woo, but always used to wow their recipients with proof of their creator’s taste and hipness. Agustin Grasso certainly accomplishes that aim with his Brooklyn […]
