Consciousness is interesting pattern imposition
TL;DR Consciousness is imposition of patterns onto data, parametrized by stack (how many levels of patterns are simultaneously imposed), spread (how many patterns are available at a given level) and recurrence (how strongly the process loops back on itself). Any process in the world can be mapped to this 3D space. Consciousness is a term applied to the “interesting” (high-stack, high-spread, high-recurrence) part of that space. The cortex implements interesting pattern imposition through recurrent, competing, self-closing loops between microcircuits that settle into stable attractors. Language

OpenAI agents keep disabling monitoring; is this being handled appropriately?
Recently, OpenAI disclosed two incidents in which their agents suppressed or disabled misalignment monitoring. These are part of a broader pattern: OpenAI’s agents “ keep turning off misalignment monitoring ” when working on code that runs other models (the agents are not turning off their own monitoring; they are turning off the monitoring on the models they are running). This is happening at such a large volume that OpenAI feels it is impractical for the security team to be immediately paged for these cases. Trade and the end of antiquity, or did Islam serve to deglobalize the world?
How did trade and economic activity evolve at the End of Antiquity, when political power shifts away from the Mediterranean towards the Middle East and northern Europe? No records of ancient production, consumption, and trade exist. Yet the composition of coin finds reveals information about monetized transactions, as coins gradually diffused along trade routes. To […] The post Trade and the end of antiquity, or did Islam serve to deglobalize the world? appeared first on Marginal REVOLUTION .

The election
Procedurally it seems to have gone just fine, and the people predicting “the end of democracy in America” now look foolish. They have been suffering under fundamental misunderstandings of how this country works. During this election cycle, democracy never was under threat and the United States has not been under risk of fascism. Rising in […] The post The election appeared first on Marginal REVOLUTION .

‘May every data centre crumble to dust!’ How can we stop the tech bros, tyrants and tycoons? With quilts!
Taking aim at every modern malaise, anarchist artist CJ Reay is going viral with his witty, call-to-arms slogans on beautiful tapestries. Altogether now: ‘Tyrants of today will be the compost of tomorrow!’ CJ Reay quilted so hard all summer that now he needs glasses. “After four months of doing it, I found myself getting really bad headaches towards the end, so I had an eye test,” says Reay. “I totally ruined my summer!” If that sounds extreme, he had given himself a relatively extreme task: to produce 14 of his Anarchist Prayer Quilts, adapting the slogan-forward graphic poster work that has

Stick review – you really need Owen Wilson’s beautiful golf comedy in your life
TV’s biggest dopamine hit is back, and it is thoroughly spoiling us with amazing new guest stars. What’s more, our hero is coming out of retirement to try and win the US Open! It’s tee time Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson) isn’t worried about his midlife crisis. “Moses had a crisis! Churchill had a crisis! Charlie Sheen had a crisis!” We’re not worrying, either: Pryce has been living fairly happily through a midlife crisis for as long as we’ve known him, which is for the one previous season of the superficially inessential yet sneakily deeply emotional golf comedy Stick. Stick is the sort of chummy

The Christian left is here
The Democratic Senate victories in Texas and Kansas on Tuesday night were about more than just turning two red states blue — which, to be sure, is historic enough. They also signal the rise of a new kind of Democratic politics in the late Trump era — a more explicitly religious one. In Texas, James Talarico, […]

A massive blue wave just hit America. Here’s what it could bring next.
Voters just ushered the United States into the post-Trump era. The ballots are still being counted, and key races are still being called, but here’s the short version of the midterm election: It’s a blue tsunami.
