J-lens preferentially reads from coordinate-aligned subspaces
Note: I only test on Gemma-4-31B, which contains the spaces I've been studying in this earlier post . This is a shorter post, with just a few observations potentially relevant to those working on the J-lens work. The main observations here are: In Gemma-4, there are two relatively small subspaces that account the majority of the J-lens readout. These are both coordinate-aligned subspaces. That means we can take a hidden state, mask out all coordinates except both these ~600 coordinate groups, and it will capture ~80-95% of the J-lens readout. These spaces are not built to capture J-lens contri

Useful Junk
Occasionally people will get excited about a minimalism fad, where you figure out which of your possessions you need and keep only those. As someone who generally doesn't like getting rid of things, I've been thinking some about why, and the main thing I keep coming back to is that random objects can be helpful in unpredictable ways. Here are some things that I kept without a specific use in mind, but that ended up being useful. You could say they saved time or money, but often the biggest gain was from being able to do a project in one go with what I already had on hand: Ethernet cable. Back

Gods of straight lines on graphs strike Starburst. I am shocked and puzzled.
LLM Intelligence, measured by Starburst, has been basically linear over time since that start of the reasoning era. By Chapin Lenthall-Cleary and Cole Gaboriault In summer 2024, my friend Cole and I started a hobby research program into perceptions of (human) intelligence. We started by creating a bespoke 1-5 intelligence scale [1] and rating people we knew. Our plan was to then make a bunch of tests, give them to the people we rated, and see which tests, if any, correlated with our ratings. One of those tests was Starburst. We’ve talked about it before ; in short, it’s a puzzle game where one

What did the Romans ever give Scotland? Heated floors, flashy sandals, sun gods – and a lot of nails
From steamy bathhouses to altars to Sol the sun god and leather shoes that still survive to this day, an eye-opening new exhibition chronicles Scotland under the Romans (before they fled) Inveresk is a handsome village near Edinburgh that sits above a curve of the little river Esk, not far from the mighty Firth of Forth. It is full of elegant 18th-century houses and an attractive kirk, dated 1805. To the casual observer, there is absolutely nothing Roman about it. And yet, in 2010, when the local cricket pavilion was being rebuilt, an extraordinary find was made – two altars made of local sand
