Defining Success
Nothing happens in a vacuum. Even if a person was a castaway, all alone on a desert island, he or she would still have in mind the approval of people back in the civilisation. Imagine the castaway is fishing. He or she would measure his or her success as a fisher in terms of proficiency, skill, manual dexterity, as seen through the eyes of people back in civilisation. If the castaway became really proficient at making a shelter, finding food and dealing with their desert island world, he or she would imagine the admiration of others. He or she would be proud of how much more ‘real’ they were t

Calculating Loss In Social Media
How not to mix things up in a world full of casual brushes with the truth – uncaring as to what is real and what is not. In principle it has always been the same for at least some of the population. Now, however, we have reached critical mass. Each uncaring and unthinking person has access to weapons of war. A tweet ricochets off another tweet and spins off into another social media platform. Like a pinball machine full of pinballs, the machine gets hot and melts down. Anger, frustration, good old-fashioned gratuitous annoyance – they have nowhere they want to go except deeper into the furnace

Notting Hill Carnival
I was out buying stuff and Tamara told me Notting Hill Carnival was on, so I went. Or rather I walked with thousands of others from Paddington. I didn’t get to see the parade, but I saw a lot of people. On the way there a notice by a police van said that facial recognition software was being used. On the way back to Paddington station I looked in the police van and a man was scanning images on a screen, and outside a man in handcuffs was shouting out to his friends – ‘I don’t know why’ and ‘It wasn’t my fault’. I wonder how good the software is? The non sequitur of the two sentences next to on

Professor Jason Arday: A Life In Tatters
Professor Jason Arday (JA) It is difficult to write this without seeming to be piling more abuse on a man who is now dead and unable to defend himself. In fact, my feeling is that the real story is about Cambridge University and how they came to appoint him and how they circled the wagons rather than look at the matter head on when things seemed not right. And similarly for previous institutions that appointed him. The allegation is of course that these institutions fell over backwards in their determination not to see JA's colour for fear that they would be prejudiced or seen as prejudiced. C

The Baltic Exchange Bombing
The IRA bombing of the Baltic Exchange might have seemed to the owners of the Exchange to be the end. In fact, it turned out to be the very platform from which the Exchange could reinvent itself and swap excess debt for cash in hand. The Baltic Exchange is currently located on the 5th floor of 77 Leadenhall Street in the City of London. It takes a lease from WeWork, which lets out flexible workspace across several floors. Before its move to Leadenhall Street The Baltic Exchange was located at 24–28 St Mary Axe. It operated there from 1903 until the IRA bombing on 10th April 1992, the day after

Inside and Outside
Of all the sensations that a person might feel, feeling inside of something or outside of something is the strongest and most central because it defines the person. How to explain it in a way that is universal and can be recognised by everyone? Longing Longing indicates an as yet unsatisfied desire. If it is not strong it is not really a desire. We have many desires that are desires in name only. Our attachment to them is partial and relatively unimportant. We measure importance on a simple scale - how much does my continued existence depend upon it? Desires that are desires in name only are l

A Blank PDF Form Is My New Favorite AI Benchmark
GPT-5.6 impressed me with a 40-hour C++ implementation, while Grok 4.5 surprised me by reconstructing a fillable PDF. Together, they suggest better ways to judge models than one-shot answers.
