Vault Bridge: a permissioned MCP middleware for agentic workflows
TL;DR: Giving LLMs access to a knowledge base is easy. Giving them scoped, permissioned, read/write access without handing over the keys to the kingdom is hard. Vault Bridge is a Rust middleware layer that sits between an Obsidian LiveSync database (CouchDB) and an MCP client, enforcing policy-as-code boundaries. The code is available at https://github.com/nareto/vault-bridge. The… The post Vault Bridge: a permissioned MCP middleware for agentic workflows appeared first on Renato Budinich .

St Jude Drawings Gallery
Now it's been a month of so since the end of St Jude September I think enough time has passed that I think everyone's drawings should have arrived now so I can share them. It's hard to pick a favourite but here's a selection of them I wanted to highlight here because I enjoy them. I won't be including Jimothy because I included him in the last post, not because I don't love him. I can't wait to do this again next year. I scanned all the drawings this year so I've put them all up on the 2026 gallery for your perusal.

The relentless positivity was really grating on me in the first couple of episodes but they won we over by the end.

I take notes in the first person
I write in the first person because it helps me think through how I understand the world, and speaks better to my Future self when I visit past notes. The practice also keeps me from the trap of writing for others, trying to meet their unstated needs. Technical, how-to style notes, do not follow this convention. There is no value in rewriting my earlier notes. Email a comment

Now, 23 October 2026
My last Now update was some time ago. Life well and truly got in the way and as Dickens said, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Looking back at Now, 26 July 2026 , the signs of what was to come were already there. My wife, who has struggled with dislocating kneecaps for 40 years had her left knee totally replaced two days later. It was planned, and I was already feeling the impact beforehand. Recovery has not gone as well as she expected/wanted though it has always progressed week to week. Today she drove us to the hospital for her physio appointments and that's were I'm w

I don't blog to a schedule
A schedule of regular writing puts a pressure on me that I don't need. It implies I am writing for an external audience and not myself. Scheduling requires a degree of planning that cuts across the creative process. Either I need to find ideas or hold them back. Email a comment

Displaying Flickr photos on my iPhone's lock screen
I've never been one for keeping photos on my iPhone. I transfer them to Mediabank nightly and tend to delete them afterwards. What I do have as of today are 300+ photos in My flickr account that I'd like to display on my lock screen. Thankfully, part of the staging for Flickr upload using IMatch to Site meant I had JPEGs readily available. Resize JPEGs to 2000 pixels on longest side Connect to my iCloud account using a browser Create a Flickr album Upload 300+ photos Create a new lock screen with a Photos shuffle Select the Flickr album as the source of photos to use I set to a new photo every

The need to be certain drives uncertainty
This year I've been thinking about confidence ratings. I find that when clients don't sufficiently understand the technology decision in front of them, then instead of relying on the advice given, they seek certainty (or 100% confidence). Even when I'm highly confident I have the right answer, this can trigger a need for me to feel like I need certainty as well and that leads to second-guessing and double-checking. I know and support the Colin Powell 40-70 rule says it's ok to move without complete certainty so having noticed this behaviour I'm curious to find a way to cut across it. Email a c

Why are we ok being asked to do more with less?
Why is it ok that we are constantly asked to do more with less? Why can't we do less with less? "You have to because I have to," isn't any more justification than the "because" we told not to use a a child. AI isn't the answer either. All it does is push the same problem further down the road. Ulitmately I suspect this is a failure to have conversations about Core concerns . Not that we can. There isn't enough time. Email a comment

My site has a human.json file
I remember the early days of blogging as a time where blogs were connectors between people so I was interested to see Corey Snipe's post Add a ‘human.json' file to a Publii Website - coreysnipes.com . The human.json protocol is lightweight protocol for humans to assert authorship of their website content and vouch for the humanity of others. Setup was simple. I created a human.json file in accordance with the instructions given., added it to The Quantum Garden Website and installed the browser add-on. When it detects a human.json is present it reads the files and checks for humanity in all dir

My photo editing syllabus
A list of software transferrable photo editing skills I want to master. Masking in order to precisely control the application of adjustments Gradients are a form of masking that keeps eluding me Dodge is the process of lightening an area Burn is the process of darkening an area Brush use as a more flexible form of masking Colour grading to correct colours in old photos Tone mapping for HDR images Blend modes for altering the direction of adjustments There are multiple ways to attack any edit and I never know which, if any, I should be choosing and trust a list to work to will help. AI: the reality
LLMs excel at generating new artefacts but fail when asked to interpret and safely update existing ones. Their value lies in text creation tasks (research, summary, explanation, deep dives), not system modification.

The Rogue Agent Myth: Why AI Agents Need Boundaries More Than Goals
Recent reports of AI going rogue are misleading and sensationalist. The AI is not rogue: agentic systems pursue objectives literally, making explicit boundaries, constraints, and escalation paths as important as the goals themselves.
