What is edge and beta in Snap store?
In the Snap store, edge and beta are two of the four predefined release levels, officially known as "channels." These determine the stability of a software release. Think of them as a pipeline that software progresses through as it becomes more stable and ready for general use. Let's talk about the two. Edge. The edge channel is for users who want to closely track the very latest development builds. This is ideal for enthusiasts or developers who want to test builds based on the most recent codebase, often straight from the project's source code repository. These builds are not stable; in othe

WSL Container Public Preview: Run Linux Containers Natively on Windows, No Docker Required
If you've been following the Linux development experience on Windows, you've likely seen buzz about WSL Container. On June 29, 2026 , Microsoft officially announced the public preview of WSL Container – and it's not a distant concept; you can try it today. Back at Microsoft Build 2026 earlier this month, the feature was teased, and many mistakenly called it "WSL 3." Microsoft Program Manager Craig Loewen later clarified: there is no WSL 3 . WSL Container is a new feature layer built on top of the existing WSL infrastructure – it's an incremental update delivered through regular WSL

Tips on using DeepSeek Chat as a search engine
I’ve been using DeepSeek Chat for a while now, probably longer than I’d like to admit. Over time, I’ve stumbled onto a few methods that completely changed how I interact with it. When I first started, I’ll be honest, I treated it like a slightly smarter search engine that I could text like a person. I’d type in a quick question, get an okay-ish answer, and call it a day. But the more I used it, the more I realized I was leaving so much potential on the table. It wasn’t that the AI wasn't good enough. It was just that I wasn’t using it properly. So, I f

The Quest for Computer Vision in Rust
I have been learning Rust on and off for a while now. I usually build small projects to get comfortable with the syntax and the compiler. Those are great for learning, and there is no shortage of tutorials out there, but I hit a wall. Following one guide after another only taught me the syntax. I felt stuck. I wanted something that would actually challenge my thinking, not just make me good at following video instructions only to draw a blank when starting from scratch. I wanted to build something I could call my own. While stewing on that, I stumbled across computer vision (CV). I did what I

Install Zig on Fedora Linux
Zig is a general-purpose programming language built for simplicity, performance, and reliability. Andrew Kelley created it in 2015 as a modern successor to C. It offers direct interoperability with existing C code while eliminating common C and C++ pitfalls like hidden control flow, macro complexity, and fragile build systems. Zig stands out through its explicit error handling, compile-time code execution, and a built-in cross-compilation toolchain. These features make it highly practical for developers targeting multiple platforms. If you are building embedded firmware, high-performance game

Install Cuda on WSL Ubuntu
I've been preparing my workstation for AI development and plan to build everything inside Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) using Ubuntu. This is a quick guide on installing the CUDA toolkit on Ubuntu WSL. It assumes you already have your Ubuntu WSL instance up and running. Verifying GPU Detection in WSL First, let's verify that the NVIDIA drivers are working and actively detecting your graphics card inside WSL. Run the NVIDIA System Management Interface tool: nvidia-smi It should print an output like this in Windows Terminal: Fri Jul 10 13:21:05 2026 +-----------------------------------------

Install Cuda on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
I recently installed Kubuntu 26.04 LTS on my System76 Serval WS laptop, which has an RTX 2070. I am currently setting up the packages I need for standard software development and upcoming AI projects for my startup, Caprycon . I needed the most reliable way to install NVIDIA drivers alongside all the necessary CUDA components. This article covers the exact step-by-step process I use to install CUDA drivers on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (the current LTS release). 1. Download and Install the CUDA Keyring First, download the CUDA keyring package for Ubuntu 26.04: wget https://developer.download.nvidia.com/

How to fix an unresponsive KDE Plasma taskbar
Today, I was coding for my startup, Caprycon , on my laptop running Kubuntu 26.04 LTS. I looked down at the bottom right of my screen to check the time and noticed it was stuck at 6:10 PM. Updating my date and time settings did nothing. When I tried to switch applications by clicking the icons on my KDE Plasma taskbar, they were unresponsive. That's when I realized the entire taskbar had frozen. Here is how to fix it. How to Fix an Unresponsive KDE Plasma Taskbar Press ALT + SPACE . This opens KRunner , which will appear as a drop-down search bar at the top of your screen. Enter the following

Vegetarian Chili
It's a slightly modified version of the chili recipe Adam Ragusea posted on his YouTube channel . I cook it every other week and it works perfectly both as a main or a side dish. When I first started cooking it, my daughter would request it over and over again, so it even became a meme within our family. 400 grams of canned kidney beans 400 grams of canned tomato pulp 3 large bell peppers 3 celery sticks 1 large onion 1 tablespoon of sugar 20 grams of dark chocolate 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce Seasoning (salt, pepper, paprika, ...) 1 tablespoon of olive oil These are the basic ingredi

Launching Magit from IntelliJ IDEA
For a large portion of git operations I use daily, I find Magit ’s interface much more convenient than git’s own CLI or IntelliJ’s UI. Although, I don’t use Emacs for all my coding projects, I’d like to have a shortcut to quickly open Magit for any git repository, either from a terminal or IDEA. When I’m in a terminal and need to open a file or a directory in Emacs, I call the following wrapper, which I have in my $PATH as emacsclient : #!/usr/bin/env bash # Bring Emacs frame to the foreground osascript << EOF tell application "System Events" tell application process "Emacs" set frontmost to t

Bouncing thoughts
I often have sleepless nights. It starts with a single thought, but then one thought leads to another and another, and soon it looks like a mini reactor with thoughts dividing and bouncing inside my head. Sometimes it's anxiety spiralling into life decisions. Often it's uncertainties or unresolved issues at work, or ideas about new projects. That may be because night is the only time when my brain is free from external stimuli and allowed to wander freely. Occasionally, I manage to redirect the thoughts and fall asleep. I used to practise meditation, and the techniques sometimes help to calm t

A take on transparency
A colleague of mine shared an interesting perspective on transparency the other day. It was in the context of decision-making in a corporate environment: It's not about everyone taking part in making the decision. It's not about telling everyone everything about what you're doing at every point during the decision-making process. It's about providing sufficient context and reasoning behind the decision—explaining why the decision was made. Too little information leaves people confused, anxious, and potentially resentful; too much can overwhelm or distract from what actually matters.

Quoting Joan Westenberg
When I write for social media, I'm writing for someone who is one thumb-flick away from a video of either a hate crime or a dog riding a skateboard. Everything I produce has to compete, in real-time, with everything else that could possibly occupy that user's attention. The incentives push toward provocation and emotional activation. The format actively punishes nuance, which means that a thoughtful caveat reads as weakness and any acknowledgment of uncertainty looks like waffling. – Joan Westenberg , The Case for Blogging in the Ruins.

File name completion in Emacs
The Emacs Carnival for February is hosted by Sacha Chua and its topic is “Completion”. Below is my entry for this month's carnival. Emacs has a myriad of ways to complete things for you in different contexts. While the one I’d like to share with you may seem trivial, the feature is so ingrained into my workflow so that I even forgot that it’s not part of the core Emacs functionality. I often switch from IntelliJ IDEA to Emacs (using a convenient shortcut ) just to use the feature. The feature provided by a wonderful cape.el package which extends the Emacs’ standard completion-at-point function

Optimising short screencasts using ffmpeg
For the previous post on file completion in Emacs I wanted to attach a short screencast demonstrating the feature in action. I recorded it with macOS's Screenshot app and then converted into gif using ffmpeg, so that it plays automatically: ffmpeg -i emacs-cape-file.mov emacs-cape-file.gif By default, the resolution of the videos recorded by Screenshot is quite high, so no surprise that the output gif turned out to be huge 1.4M . Even though it was only part of the screen recorded, the resolution was 1730x1658 , which is way more than I needed to publish it on a web page. To reduce the resolut

On Tesla Roadster
I think it’s yet another Ponzi scheme aimed at inflating the stock price of X. The demo is impressive, I must admit. Beyond that: a toy by the rich, for the rich at the expense of the rest of society. In a world that is burning in the flames of climate crisis, spending resources on such a bizarre and useless thing is simply immoral.
