Uncloud Prometheus, part II
Had some fun playing with my fork of Uncloud . And making metrics work. Metrics are now part of Uncloud proper - uncloudplus can now drop it. In prometheus we use dns_sd_configs to pick up new things automatically: - job_name : uncloud dns_sd_configs : - names : [ "m.internal" ] type : A port : 51090 - job_name : caddy dns_sd_configs : - names : [ "caddy.internal" ] type : A port : 2019 For caddy metrics, we hack around a little… in the x-caddy file we deploy for Caddy add: metrics { per_host } But this serves metrics on localhost inside the container. So we need to export this, we can&

Uncloud Tips
Uncloud’s docs are great, but a few things are buried a bit. Hence a simple list of things that can improve your interactions with Uncloud. SSH ProxyJump Sometimes you can not directly connect to a cluster, you first have to SSH into a host that is directly connected to a cluster. If this is the case use a SSH proxy jump (see ssh(1)). This allows you to, e.g. use a local docker to build images that can then be pushed to the cluster.

DENIC Post-mortem Critique
This is the final report from DENIC on the outage they experienced on the 5th of May 2026. I appreciate the openness, but I’ve reviewed (and written :/) many post-mortems and this one could be a lot better. Using one of the readily available post-mortem templates would have helped. The main issues: No timeline. Lack of technical details. 50% of the action items are weakly defined. Let go over it. I’ve put my comments after “My remarks”, after each quoted section.

Uncloud Unpush
Unpush is an experimental attempt to write automatic CI/CD in Uncloud, it either works via web hooks or polls a repository for changes. When seen it redeploys a service via its compose.yaml file from the repository. Now of course this works for GitHub, but we have GitLab and it reimplements a bunch of code from uncloud , which can all be removed if you just use the uc -tool. I will probably butcher the code quite a bit, so seems fair to push this to a different repository at some point.

Uncloud Server Setup
I’m thinking about “upgrading” my server from Ubuntu to Fedora and thereby also making Uncloud a part of my routine, but …… This can be done, but doing a container style setup, does mean I need some extra infra, like a container registry, also my DNS server needs to set source IP addresses for notifies unsure if that will still work. And Caddy with L4 forwarding and getting TLS certificates can cause issues, because it interferes with each other (i.e. Caddy is starting, but not L4-forwarding, aks for a certificate, DNS is still not working, cert is not handed ou

Uncloud Server Setup: DONE!
This was the plan and I finally got around doing it. The original list was: A docker registry for pushing and pulling images too. Maybe I can setup Forgejo to also be a registry, but just the docker registry might be enough. The image comes from Docker Hub. Caddy with L4 forwarding, I can easily make the image myself, and push it to the local registry. S3 storage so that I can make backups with Kopia - probably going to use Garage for this, doesn’t need a certificate and should only advertise itself on the internal network - not sure how to do this, without actively blocking. atomdns as

Uncloud Host Networking
My server is almost fully converted to be managed by Uncloud , except for one service: atomdns . Which at first I didn’t mind, but now find annoying, because: uc ps doesn’t list it; my Prometheus metrics collector runs in the cluster, so it can’t easily scrape it; updates for it are different; managing means logging in onto the specific machine. Hence I wanted it run inside the cluster. There are however a few constraints, atomdns needs:

Unrequired Reading, 002
I tried a new hobby this week, making chocolate bonbons. Painted the moulds with cocoa butter I bought a few colours, shelled them with tempered chocolate, filled them with curd and sealed the whole thing with another layer. It was fiddly and messy, I did Apple and blackcurrant for the first batch, then a lemon that came out wincingly sharp against sweet Belgian chocolate. I made quite a few mistakes but it was nice to do something with my hands. Some of them even turned out nicely. Watching Invincible Series Four was really good, if you can get past the gore it’s moral quandaries that superhe

Unrequired Reading, 003
Tools over problems I've been thinking this week about how addictive it is with these new tools to be able to build things without so much of the friction. The danger of that is falling in love with the effort and interactions over solving the problem. This is partly because of Karl Koch's piece on falling in love with the build , which is about the dangerous little pleasure of making something nice and then trying to find a reason for it afterwards. It is aimed at design engineers, but it applies neatly to almost anything creative. Just look at this website, it's exactly that level of over-en

The deep work versus all the work
With AI tools there's more software shipping more than ever. The thread across my talks with other leaders are consistently being told to scale beyond adding headcount. The model of the trifecta and design being embedded in every piece of work on a single roadmap just isn't scaling for this new world. If we don't adapt we end up being either overwhelmed with work or only overseeing part of the product. Watch enough work go out without design and you notice what's slipping: quality. Not some abstract version of it, the standard you've held for years, now leaving the building in your name withou
