State of a system
Almost eight years ago, I started working on a design system that I got the opportunity to revisit just a few years later. The second round became as big a push with far fewer people. Now, three years after ending the work I’m finally ready to share that experience. My thesis: A rigid design kit is a cache of design decisions, prone to becoming obsolete with the requirements constantly evolving. Documenting practices and boundaries leaves powerless responsibility for upholding coherence to designers and developers. Governing an LLM skill could be a better basis for an evolving design system th

An Italian Folding Bicycle Design that Fits Into a Suitcase
This T&C Pocket Bici is a folding bicycle made by Tresoldi & Casiraghi, an Italian metalworking firm, in 1963. Unlike the folding bicycles of today that split in half, the components here all fold into the racetrack-shaped frame. The whole thing then fits within its own suitcase. (Brompton bike in the photo for scale.) The bike's origin story is a bit murky; one auction site claims it was created specifically for the Chinese market, and that 2,500 units were sold. In contrast, BikeFlip says a Chinese group placed an initial order for 2,000 units, but that after T&C produced the first 1,000 uni

Industrial Design Student Work: A Hard Drive that Visually Indicates How Full It Is
This morphing hard drive enclosure is by Antonin Odin , done as an Industrial Design student at France's ENSCI . People increasingly want more visibility over their data, more taste in the objects they live with, and more function from both. ZO is a 12 TB personal server that gives storage a body. Empty, it's a plain aluminium tube. As it fills up, its fins slide out one by one, one millimetre for every 400 GB. Switched off, it keeps its shape: it shows what it holds. It's built to live on a shelf, rather than hide in a rack. An almost ritual object that makes what we entrust to the machine vi

Unidome's Transparent Igloos
Earlier we looked at the work of Dream Domes , a UK-based event structure company. They've worked out a way to erect large event tents with no central support. In the UK is another company called Unidome that also builds circular-footprint event structures, albeit smaller, and with transparent walls. Rather than being competitors, the two companies are collaborating. This year patrons of Glide , an ice skating rink located at the Battersea Power Station retail and dining complex, can rent these Unidome "igloos" for 90-minute periods. Dream Domes is doing the installation. Dream Domes says they

Automatic Drop Down Seals for Doors
The automatic door bottom is a clever bit of engineering that prevents under-door drafts, without installing a skirt that drags across your floor. Also called an automatic drop seal, it consists of an aluminum extrusion mounted in a dado cut into the bottom of the door. A little brass plunger protrudes from one end on the hinge side. As you close the door, the plunger is forced inside the assembly, where it triggers the spring-loaded seal to drop to the threshold, sealing the gap. Opening the door causes the seal to retract. Automatic door bottoms are useful not only for sealing drafts, but al

The Unique Fairings on Bandit9's RED 800 Motorcycle
You probably know of RED , Bono's organization that raises fund to fight preventable diseases, through their many collaborations with Apple and Jony Ive; there were special RED iPod Nanos, iPhones and even a Mac Pro. Now RED's moved into the motorsports space, partnering with motorcycle designer Daryl Villanueva. Villanueva's firm, Bandit9 , will be producing nine of these RED 800 Ducati-powered motorcycles: As you can see, rather than painting the entire thing red, Villanueva's opted to carefully fade a hand-painted finish into the brushed aluminum of the fairing. "Fewer parts," writes Villan
